With the end of winter and the return of warmer sunny days, the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Mura River in Ceršak has come to life. The bridge on the international cycling route between the Šentilj/Spielfeld border crossing and Črnci is visited by cyclists and hikers from both sides of the border. The bridge offers stunning views of the river and its natural environment, a place to stop, meet and relax.The hybrid wood-steel-concrete structure was designed by Ponting Bridges with long-term durability and minimal intervention in the riverbed in mind. The bridge, which spans the Mura River with its 86-meter clear span, is not only a cycling link between Slovenia and Austria, but also an important technological achievement. In addition to the design, Ponting engineers also took over the entire construction supervision, which was key during the demanding assembly of the bridge's superstructure. The entire bridge structure was installed in a single lift, with a 650-ton crane, without temporary supports in the riverbed, directly onto the suspended bearing cables.
The bridge consists of two parallel 87.6-meter long glulam timber girders (B/H = 28/130 cm), suspended with high-strength FLC-cables, via steel frames and tension-rods. The FLC bearing cables are attached at the tips of the V-shaped concrete pylons at the abutments, on either side of the Mura River. The wooden bearing structure is structurally weather-protected with wooden panels (larch, Accoya), anti-insect nets, anti-spray steel sheets and stainless-steel lids. The deck is also wooden, made of cross-laid grooved Accoya boards.
The construction was carried out by the companies Pomgrad, Teufelberger-Redaelli, BS VAR, Šušteršič, Up2Plan and Knuplež. The project was co-financed with EU funds within the Slovenia-Austria Interreg program.
