The contractor started laying the first layer of asphalt on Tuesday. The works began in the middle of the bridge, by pillar number seven, in the direction to the mainland. A specific cast asphalt is 4 cm thick. This asphalt is more resistant to water and salt penetration and will as such better protect the structure of the bridge.The completion of the tarmacking is expected by the end of November. In parallel, the installation of wind barrier for wind protection of the bridge, the implementation of electrical installations and the application of a protective coating on concrete pillars also began.
According to plans and works on the access roads, the first vehicles could cross it in March next year.
The Pelješac bridge project was prepared by Joint Venture Pipenbaher Consulting Engineers, Ponting and University of Zagreb, Faculty of civil engineering. The contract for the main design was signed at the end of the year 2012, and the contract for supervision, control and additional consulting services in 2018, at the start of construction.
The author of architectural and structural bridge concept and the Main Designer of the bridge is Marjan Pipenbaher, the client Hrvatske ceste d.o.o., and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is contractor.
