Construction of the new two-level experiential bridge Muste is progressing successfully in Ljubljana. With a span of 72 metres, the bridge will cross the Ljubljanica River and provide an important connection between Štepanjsko naselje and Nove Fužine. The project also includes the development of a new pavilion and two public squares on both banks of the river.Construction works are advancing according to plan. The lower girder structure of the bridge has already been completed, and cable prestressing was carried out in the previous week. The next phase will involve the construction of a shallow load-bearing arch above the central section of the bridge. This arch will add an additional level to the structure while enabling new spatial possibilities and other interesting uses. Construction began in early 2025, with completion scheduled for the first half of 2026.
The bridge is conceived as a multifunctional public space rather than merely a crossing structure. It is intended for pedestrians and cyclists, with the bridge deck divided into pathways along the outer edges and a central zone spanned by the shallow arch, from which the lower structure is suspended. Beneath the arch, a space for rest and events will be created, while above it a curved ramp will offer visitors additional viewpoints and an enhanced experiential journey.
Upon completion, the bridge together with the new pavilion and the two squares on either side of the river will form an important new urban focal point and serve as a symbol of connection between the communities on both banks of the Ljubljanica.
The design for the new pedestrian and cycling bridge, developed by the teams from Pipenbaher Engineers, Ponting, and Atelier Arhitekti, was selected through a public competition in 2019. The investor for the entire project is the City Municipality of Ljubljana, with construction being carried out by Strabag.
