Construction of the main road from Markovci to Ormož

The construction of the main two-lane road from Markovci to Ormož in Slovenia has been underway since August last year. On the 16.09 km long section, Ponting Bridges designed a 270-meter-long bridge over the Formin Hydroelectric Power Plant canal, the already completed 195-meter-long Sejanca viaduct, and the 83-meter-long Ormož overpass. The new section will significantly improve the transport system in the Podravska region and traffic safety.

The construction of the already completed Sejanca viaduct was suspended in 2009 due to the economic crisis and the collapse of the main contractor. Due to changed conditions and the reconstruction of the railway line, it was necessary to change the primary design of the viaduct. Designed by Ponting, the viaduct was built in 2020, with access arrangements and finishing works carried out in 2024 and 2025.

The completion of the Sejanca viaduct enabled construction site traffic and the delivery of bulk material from the Sejanca viaduct to the Formin hydroelectric power plant canal. The 270 m long bridge over the Formin canal will be the most demanding structure on the entire route of the two-lane road. Both end supports have already been built, preparations are currently underway for the construction of intermediate supports. The bridge over a canal with a water depth of 8 to 14 m will be built using cantilever construction technology with spans of 77.5 m + 114 m + 77.5 m.

The 83-meter-long overpass of the main road Ptuj–Ormož is designed as a reinforced concrete frame over three fields.

The contractor of the works is a consortium of companies Pomgrad, VOC Celje and Cestno podjetje Ptuj, the investor is the Motorway Company of the Republic of Slovenia (DARS), and the engineer is DRI Ljubljana. The section is expected to be completed in early 2027.
