The largest bridge construction project in South – East Europe right now, the Pelješac Bridge in Croatia, is nearing completion. The final superstructure steel segment should be installed on the 28th of July. The bridge will physically connect the Croatian mainland with the Pelješac Peninsula on the Adriatic coastal Motorway between Split and Dubrovnik.One of the future symbols of modern Croatia, a 2404-meter long bridge is a multi-span extradosed cable-stayed structure with an orthotropic steel deck. The width of the three-cell superstructure is 22,5 meters. The pylon heights above the sea level differ from 75,4 to 100 meters.
The traffic surface on the bridge consists of two carriageways, each with a driving and a stop lane. According to plans and works on the access roads, the first vehicles could cross it in March next year.
The Pelješac bridge project was prepared by Joint Venture Pipenbaher Consulting Engineers, Ponting and University of Zagreb, Faculty of civil engineering. The contract for the main design was signed at the end of the year 2012, and the contract for supervision, control and additional consulting services in 2018, at the start of construction.
The author of architectural and structural bridge concept and the Main Designer of the bridge is Marjan Pipenbaher, the client Hrvatske ceste d.o.o., and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is contractor.
